Eaton Lighting: LED technology is changing the way we design lighting for stadiums and other sports facilities
A gymnasium or gym has unique lighting needs and requires adequate lighting to keep participants focused and safe. In areas with high ceilings or over a swimming pool, lights are hard to reach, so changing them can be difficult.
Steve Johnson , marketing manager of Eaton’s Lighting Division , believes that LED technology is changing the way we design lighting for stadiums and other sports facilities.
“Stadiums and sports facilities require durable lighting solutions that provide high lumens, minimal glare and comprehensive control,” he said. “These locations have varying ceiling heights and host a variety of events. They present a unique set of challenges , but LED provides an ideal solution.”

Stadiums can be used for a variety of sports and various other activities, which makes LED lighting an excellent choice for these venues.
LED lighting in gyms and other indoor fitness centers can have a dramatic impact on the experience of those inside. The bright, high lumen output and minimal glare also provide high clarity for players when shooting or performing other actions.
Lighting maintenance in traditional gymnasiums can be difficult due to high ceiling heights.
“A typical gym has an average ceiling height of about 25 feet (7.62 meters),” Johnson said. “Depending on the classification of the facility, the required lighting level for a gym can range from 60FC to 125FC.”
That’s why it’s important to reduce lighting fixture replacement or repair. The service life of LEDs typically exceeds 50,000 hours, compared to the 18,000-hour lifespan of traditional metal halides.
LEDs can also change the atmosphere of your gym. Features such as dimming, sensor control and color adjustment help create the right environment for a variety of activities, from youth volleyball games to senior aerobics classes.
Group fitness room
Group gyms also need to be as flexible as bodybuilders. A versatile group fitness room can be used for a variety of class types, each with their own lighting needs.
“Gyms can be used for a variety of activities at different times of the day, and most lighting equipment inside is on for 18 hours or more per day,” Johnson said. “LEDs provide dimming, control and sensing sensors, and the bulbs last longer. ”
At aerobics boot camp or other high-intensity classes, use yellow and orange lights to set the mood. Bright light is also important to help students see others and avoid injury, especially during strenuous or active sports.
Conversely, soft light can create a relaxing environment for a yoga or Pilates class, creating a calming feel. Wall sconces are a great way to generate ambient lighting for these courses. With a low-light lighting scheme, students can focus on their breathing and rhythm and focus on a sequence of movements.
Darker, club-style lighting solutions are increasingly popular in stationary bike riding classes. Since the student is always on the bike, dimming is not as important as a safety issue. Creative lighting design can also turn this classroom into a more interactive experience. Using lighting controls to connect music, lighting and dimming can have a big impact on the course experience.

Recessed LED lighting can provide highly uniform, less dazzling light, which is very suitable for aerobic exercise. Cross trainers, treadmills, and other equipment often have angled control panels. Use uplighting to reduce bright light reflections caused by machines. Suspended indirect/direct lighting systems are also ideal for aerobics rooms. These systems direct large amounts of light back to the ceiling, creating a bright and airy feel. Ceiling height should be considered when using suspended LED lighting systems so that athletes do not have access to the lights. By taking reflection, glare and brightness into account, you can create a comfortable environment for aerobic exercise.

The swimming area is unlike anywhere else in a gym or fitness center. Consideration needs to be given to lighting levels on the pool deck and underwater. In these places, lighting must provide:
